American Airlines To Begin Four New Flights on April 5

American Airlines (AA) will launch service from Washington DCA to Cleveland and Minneapolis, plus two flights to Madison, WI from Chicago and Charlotte.

According to American Airlines’ (AA) flight schedule and the latest OAG update, the airline will be starting four new flights on April 5 2016, with new service between Washington-National to Cleveland and Minneapolis. Additionally, it will fly to Madison, WI, from Chicago and Charlotte.

Washington-National-Cleveland/Minneapolis

American will begin flying up to four daily round-trip flights between the U.S. Capital and Cleveland, Ohio with CRJ-200s operated by Air Wisconsin on April 5, 2015. For those in Cleveland, the new service is welcome, as United will now have some competition. United flies approximately five daily round trip flights with ERJ-145s between the cities.

Since American is entering “United territory,” it does bring up the question whether United will up-gauge to larger aircraft or increase frequency on the route to try to push AA out, like it seems to be trying to do in response to Virgin America entering the DEN-SFO market.

American’s Washington-National expansion continues with the addition of three daily round trip flights between Washington and Minneapolis which also start on April 5, 2015; the new flights will be operated by Republic Airways E-170s and E-175s. American will be going head to head with Delta on this new route; Delta offers approximately six daily flights with a mix of MD-90/A319/A320s and E170/E175s on this route.

The new Cleveland and Minneapolis flights are scheduled to start four months after it launches new flights between Washington-National and Atlanta.

Charlotte-Madison, WI

The addition of Charlotte-Madison flights is a huge welcome for Madison as there appears to be some growth at the airport. Earlier this year, United began flying mainline flights between Chicago and Madison, and last year, the airport secured funding to help install new technology that will allow aircraft to make low-visibility landings. American will begin flying two daily round trip flights with PSA CRJ-700s on April 5. American already offers service to/from Madison from both Dallas/Ft. Worth and Chicago.

Chicago-Norfolk

At one point in time, American offered nonstop flights between Chicago O’Hare and Norfolk, but it was discontinued. Now, American will finally re-connect passengers between Chicago and Norfolk; plus, it will also play a roll in connecting people between the Midwest and Norfolk. American already offers flights between Norfolk and Charlotte, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Miami, New York JFK, New York LGA, Philadelphia, and Washington-National.

On April 5, American will begin flying three daily roundtrip flights between Chicago O’Hare and Norfolk with Envoy CRJ-700s. It will have to go up against United who offers both regional and mainline service between Chicago and Norfolk as well as Southwest who offers nonstop flights from O’Hare’s neighboring airport, Midway.
