Gatwick Airport installs iris recognition system

As part of its €50 million upgrade, Gatwick has deployed an iris recognition security system at 34 of its automated e-Gates in the South Terminal, in a bid to reduce security times for passengers to an average of five minutes.

AOptix Technologies has teamed up with Human Recognition Systems (HRS), which specialises in identity management, to implement the AOptix InSight VM iris recognition system at the gateway.

With the InSight VM technology, passengers have their iris scanned along with their boarding pass at both the entrance and exit to the international departures lounge, making sure that the right person enters and leaves the airport.

The technology will be integrated with the MFlow Track system, developed by HRS, which uses face recognition to track passengers through the building and allows the airport to measure the time that passengers spend in each area of the terminal.

Dean Senner, CEO of AOptix.  “Iris at-a-distance from AOptix and the HRS MFlow Track is the hassle-free, non-intrusive security experience that passengers are looking for at today’s modern airports.”

According to Senner, the AOptix-HRS approach delivers a “highly accurate match of passenger to boarding pass on a remarkably consistent basis”.

Neil Norman, CEO of HRS, added: “Human Recognition Systems has been deploying iris recognition systems for10 years now and with the introduction of the InSight iris recognition solution from AOptix, we are able to exploit the full power of iris biometrics.”

Meanwhile, Geoff Williams, head of security at Gatwick Airport, said: “Already passengers are spending on average less than five minutes in security.

“With our new spacious preparation area and 19 security lanes, some of which are designed to assist families with young children and premium travellers, the new technology will help increase the efficiency of the security operation and provide a better service."
