London Luton Airport sees double with second award win

London Luton Airport is proud to announce it has been awarded BS OHSAS I8001:2007 certification; the internationally recognised standard for health and safety management.

» Airports - UK | Wednesday, February 26, 2014 • Air News Times
The award follows the Airport’s achievement of ISO 14001:2004 certification for its commitment to environmental management in 2013.  Both awards demonstrate London Luton Airport’s commitment to continuous improvement of its environmental performance and health and safety management.

BS OHSAS I8001:2007 sets out the requirements for occupational health and safety management best practice, it helps to manage hazards and mitigate risk to make way for a safer workplace, better performance and ongoing compliance.

The accreditation, which marks the culmination of over a year of dedicated work, has already brought tangible benefits to those working at, and travelling through, London Luton.  There has been a 50% reduction in passenger accidents and an 800% increase in near miss reporting, evidence of staff understanding the importance of effective health and safety management procedures and making them an integral part of their working day.

Simon Bown, Senior Manager - Health, Safety & Environment at London Luton Airport, said:
‘We are delighted to have achieved yet further certified recognition for our work.  An excellent example of how working towards accreditation for both BS OHSAS I8001:2007 and ISO 14001:2004 has resulted in real changes in the workplace are the works carried out in our Technical Services/ Motor Transport departments.  New energy efficient lighting has been installed in vehicle maintenance areas improving lux levels to ensure safe working whilst also reducing electricity consumption.  Improvements have also been made to the flooring and welfare facilities including new lockers and a purpose built drying room for PPE equipment.’
