Spectacular celebration of 100th year

Highlights of the festivities will include:

• World War II Talk and Book Signings – Jimmy Shannon, co-pilot for the C-47 that extracted James “Jimmy” Doolittle and his crew from China after their daring Tokyo Raid, will give a talk on his World War II experiences and Jonna Doolittle Hoppes, author and granddaughter of Gen. Doolittle will sign books, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, at the State Museum, 301 Gevais St. Hoppes will also be on hand at a book signing and meet and greet, at 2:30 p.m. Friday, at the Richland County Public Library, 1431 Assembly St.

• Aviation Dinner – Hoppes will be the featured speaker at this fundraiser, 7 p.m. Friday, at The Hall at Senate’s End, 320 Senate St. Tickets are $50 and proceeds from the event will go to support the foundation’s efforts to restore the World War II-era B-25C Mitchell bomber ditched in Lake Greenwood on D-Day. Will include a book signing by Hoppes.

• Aviation Celebration This event will feature WWII aviators as well as members of the regional chapter of The Ninety-Nines International Organization of Women Pilots, the Carolinas 99s, who will be flying in at various times from all over the country. The event will also include the Mitchell bomber on public view, a C-47 cargo plane, talks and living history displays, 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, at the Eagle Aviation Hangar, Hamilton Owens Airport, 1400 Jim Hamilton Blvd.
