Tiger stops Sydney flights

A decision by Tiger Airways to suspend its daily Sydney to Sunshine Coast route from August 1 has been met with mixed reaction from the tourism industry.

The budget airline says the hiatus is necessary to “simplify its Australian flying program” so that it can “focus on restoring the punctuality of its operation”.

Sunshine Coast Destination chairman Mark Skinner said he hoped the changes were a case of a “short-term pain for a long-term gain”.

“I suppose to lose any airline service to the Sunshine Coast is not good,” he said.

“But the quality of the airline service is imperative.

“As someone who has caught one of their delayed flights before, I understand how frustrating it can be.”

Mr Skinner said Sunshine Coast Destinations supported Tiger Airways’ presence in the region.

“We were excited when they announced new routes to the region so we hope they return once the issues have been managed.”

Other affected routes are Melbourne to Mackay, Melbourne to Rockhampton, Brisbane to Sydney.

Chief executive officer of Tiger Airways, Crawford Rix, said affected passengers on these routes would be contacted and provided
with a full refund.

“The airline’s flights to Mackay and Rockhampton have in recent months been adversely affected by rising oil prices and the recent Queensland natural disasters,” he said.

“In addition, as the airline does not currently have a crew base in New South Wales or Queensland, operating punctual flights between Brisbane to Sydney and Sydney to Sunshine Coast has proved more challenging than anticipated.

“We know that our customers expect an on-time flight as well as a great fare from Tiger Airways.”

Tiger Airways will continue its daily Sunshine Coast to Melbourne service.

Virgin Blue and Jetstar will continue to service Sydney daily.
